Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Events Program
The Youth Events Program supports Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentors and their Littles by creating social opportunities that foster and strengthen their relationship through safe and fun activities. It creates a chance for at-risk Collin County youth to enjoy their Big Brother Big Sisters’ mentor outside of their usual 30 minute per week visit at school. This project provides alternative adult-supervised activities for youth who might otherwise engage in at-risk behavior.

CITY House Teen Team
This project provides the CITY House residents with opportunities for positive self esteem building/social interaction through off-site “hands on” fun activities and on-site basic life skills to prepare youth at CITY House for independent living. This project presents positive adult role models for the youth at CITY House where JLP volunteers spend two evenings per week working with the youth.

Civil War in Collin County
The purpose of this project is to educate fourth and fifth grade students from Collin County area schools about life in Collin County during the Civil War era. Located at the Collin County Historical Society and Museum, tours are closely aligned with the state’s Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills requirements and Civil War curriculum the students study in the spring. Volunteers serve as tour guides through the museum.

Collin County Council on Family Violence
The Council is facilitated by the JLP and is made up of community leaders and social services professionals striving together to eliminate family violence in Collin County. The committee fosters collaboration between agencies working to combat crimes associated with family violence. This project provides unprecedented training, community networking, and unique hands-on experience working directly with community partners, elected officials, board presidents, and executive directors of various community organizations to address the growing problem of Family Violence in Collin County.

Done in a Day (DIAD)
DIAD provides volunteer support for community projects that can be accomplished in a one-time evening or weekend setting. Members provide hands-on assistance (excluding soliciting, telemarketing, fundraising, or enabling fundraising) to non-profit organizations in Collin County in need of volunteer assistance in achieving their goals. Through this project JLP supports a wide range of community services.

Fit STEPS
This project supports the Cancer Foundation for Life. Cancer Foundation for Life is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for persons living with cancer by providing physical conditioning and psychological support programs. First Baptist Church of Plano has donated the gym space for this project. Our volunteers are trained to check in patients, update medical data and assist participants in their work out programs twice a week for four hours.

Kids In the Kitchen
The purpose of this project is to educate the community at large on the growing issues of childhood obesity and poor nutrition. This special committee develops, promotes and executes the annual Kids in the Kitchen event in conjunction with AJLI. The event educates children and families on childhood nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Literacy Leaders
Trained JLP volunteers assist in teaching adult and children’s literacy classes, provide one on one tutoring, curriculum development, and facilitation of group sessions. This program offers adult education, early childhood education, and parenting education to speakers of another language other than English as well as basic literacy skills.

My Friend's House
My Friend’s House is a 28 bed emergency shelter for children who range in age from birth to nine years of age who have been removed from their homes due to allegations of abuse and neglect. JLP volunteers bring a weekly reading program to the children at My Friend’s House.

Plano Provides Community Garden
Working with the City of Plano, this project creates and runs a community garden that donates the bulk of its harvest to local food pantries. The committee runs the “Adopt-A-Plot program. Gardening will be done by members of the community who agree to “Adopt-A-Plot” for that year. This project won the 2008-2009 Community impact Award from AJLI.

Reaching for Sci-Tech
The Sci-Tech Discovery Center provides a dynamic, interactive experience that inspires people of all ages and backgrounds to embrace discovery and innovation through the exploration of science, math, and technology. This committee assists The Sci-Tech Discovery Center with community outreach by presenting Mind-Stretching Fun activities that provide exciting and simple interactive experiences for children of all ages in Collin County.

Turning Point Teen Awareness Program
The purpose of the Teen Awareness Program (TAP) is to provide educational training to 6th-12th grade students regarding sexual harassment, sexual assault, date rape, date rape drugs, and how to avoid potentially dangerous situations. It is a weekday educational program for Collin county middle and high school students facilitated by JLP members using age appropriate information, games and question/answer time. This project won the 2005-2006 Community impact Award from AJLI.
