Fall Festival Fun at Samaritan Inn

(This full article by Bettina Williford may also be found online at NeighborsGo.com)

Pumpkins and laughter filled the hallways of McKinney’s Samaritan Inn as the Plano Junior League hosted the annual Fall Festival for residents of all ages.  Over sixty residents of all ages played games, sang karaoke, posed for pictures, and ate sweets on Tuesday October 21, 2008.

In the children’s room, JLP members helped resident children make foam masks covered in feathers and colorful sequins.

The highlight of the evening was a visit from a “real” Darth Vader.  Children clamored to hold his light-saber.

Teenagers argued whether or not he was a good guy or just extremely cool.  A shy man, originally from Africa, proudly held his own pumpkin as he discovered Halloween traditions.  The room burst into laughter when a mother insisted Darth Vader hold her baby for a picture.

It was a special night for everyone involved, and adult residents were given pumpkins to decorate their rooms.  The evening ended with smiles on a sugar high.

Outreach Project Spotlight

Precious Little Ones-Pier’s Project 2008/2009

You just delivered your baby at 20 weeks gestation.  Doctors, nurses, specialists, and machines are quickly assembled and your newborn is whisked away.  You and your loved ones are left scared and confused as to the fate of your premature baby.  Thanks to the dedicated and compassionate doctors, nurses and support staff at the Medical Center of Plano your baby will receive high tech and loving care while he or she continues to develop and mature.  Overtime, you will see a change in your baby and every change is a milestone.  There may be setbacks, but there is hope and support as time goes on.

The JLP is a part of the dedicated group of individuals who provide support for the NICU at the Medical Center of Plano.  Pier’s Project, affectionately named for a member’s infant who spent time in the NICU, provides support to the families, babies, and staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and ante-partum moms in the Women’s Services department at Medical Center of Plano.

Pier’s Project also hosts an evening of conversation, laughter, and stories with the ante-partum moms that includes dinner and a craft twice monthly.  Those moms that are able to join our Ladies in Waiting night love having dinner brought in from a local restaurant and actually visiting and becoming friends with the other moms who they would otherwise never meet!

JLP Volunteers also participate in several events at the MCP throughout the year such as the Santa Christmas Party, Nurses Appreciation Day, and a NICU Reunion in June!  The fourteen committee members volunteer over 60 hours a month in addition to their special projects, helping the nurses bathe babies, change diapers, giving comfort to babies who are having a difficult time, stocking supplies, providing administrative support, working in the Ante-partum Unit visiting moms or helping with miscellaneous tasks.
